In 2010, SSWR launched the National Research Capacity Building Initiative (NRCBI). NRCBI activities advocate for social work research and social work research funding at the national level, train researchers at all career levels, and develop strategies to expand infrastructure and research capacity building at schools and departments of social work.
It is critical that the social work research community maintain its presence in Washington, D.C. and we’re pleased that in 2011 Dr. Sarah Gehlert, E. Desmond Lee Professor of Racial and Ethnic Diversity, George Warren Brown School of Social Work, Washington University in St. Louis assumed responsibility as SSWR Senior Fellow to provide leadership in this area. Through the NRCBI, SSWR has developed a long-term strategic solution that will ensure the profession’s ongoing research presence at the federal level. SSWR’s representatives meet frequently with federal funders from NIH, NIMH, NIA, NIAAA, NCI, NIDA, NINR, NICHD, and OBSSR, and have met with the Congressional Social Work Caucus, to promote social work research and social work research funding, and to enhance the visibility of social work research as a science-based discipline.
In collaboration with other social work organizations to support research capacity building in all levels of research programs, SSWR has been working with BPD, GADE, NADD, CSWE, and NASW to offer workshops, participate in invited panels, write letters of advocacy or support, and attend symposiums and conferences to advance social work research. In addition to the NRCBI, SSWR continues to hold a highly successful annual research conference and publish cutting edge articles in the recently established online, open access journal, the Journal of the Society for Social Work and Research.

The Social Work NIH Grant Directory provides an overview of NIH grants awarded to social work researchers between 1993 and the present time. The listing includes researchers at social work programs or those at other institutions that were identified as having a social work degree. We recognize that the information in this directory may not be as comprehensive as we would like and therefore ask that you provide us with updates on past and current grants.
The Directory was launched in 2004 by the Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research (IASWR). When IASWR dissolved in October 2009, the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work committed to continuing to keep the Directory up to date.
We hope that you will find the information as inspiring and informative as we do. The Directory illustrates the depth of social work research and it shows the exciting and challenging road ahead. Moreover, it provides unique opportunities for junior faculty to reach out to accomplished researchers and form collaborations across universities and programs.
