Social Work Research to Policy Boot Camp

March 15-16, 2017

Washington, DC

Application Deadline: November 15, 2016

The Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) and The Fund for Social Policy Education and Practice (FSPEP) with support from the Lou and Samuel Silberman Fund at The New York Community Trust in partnership with The Urban Institute are conducting a Social Work Research to Policy Boot Camp on March 15-16, 2017 in Washington, DC. The goal of the FSPEP is to strengthen the social work profession by improving the effectiveness of policy and service efforts designed to ameliorate persistent poverty and growing inequality. The Social Work Research to Policy Boot Camp is designed to help social work researchers develop their ability to share their research effectively with policymakers. Over a day and a half, participants will interact with policymakers and media to learn what skills they need and through hands-on sessions participants will build these skills.

The Social Work Research to Policy Boot Camp is focused primarily at early and mid-career social work researchers. It is open to social work researchers who want to learn how to effectively communicate their research to influence policy. The application deadline is November 15, 2016. Decisions will be sent to all applicants on December 1, 2016.

All application materials will be submitted electronically and application packets must include:

  • A letter of overall and financial support from your Dean, Director, or Chair.
  • A biographical sketch using the NIH form or format (four-page limit)
  • A statement of interest (two-pages)
    • Describing your immediate research interests/goals and how/why the Social Work Research to Policy Boot Camp can support those goals.
    • How your research and interest advance policy and service efforts designed to address growing disparities and poverty.
    • Challenges you expect to face in communicating your research to policy.
    • Briefly articulate the policy implication of your research and how your research can/has contributed to advancing social policy at the local, state or federal level.

The Social Work Research to Policy Boot Camp is limited to 25 participants on a first come basis, so early submission of application packets are encouraged.
