SSWR provides opportunities for students to “earn” their registration fee by volunteering at the SSWR 2021 virtual annual conference.
Student volunteers shall serve no more than 4 hours of time during the virtual conference.
Student volunteer duties may include:
- Monitor 60-minute concurrent sessions held in Zoom meeting platform (e.g., assist in notifying the virtual conference vendor about tech problems)
- Assist in fielding questions via real-time, virtual help desk (e.g., membership, students, general, conference networking & communications, post-conference events)
Student volunteers will be expected to view a 15-minute instructional video prior to the conference. We will notify student volunteers when the video is available online.
Please note that all Student Volunteers must be current SSWR members as of January 1, 2021. You may renew or join in 2020 for 2021 at www.sswr.org. If you do not know your member ID, please contact SSWR at info@sswr.org.
Volunteers who do not complete their shifts will be responsible for the conference fee and may not be accepted as a volunteer the following year. Students who are also presenters may schedule their volunteer time so it does not conflict with their presentation(s).
Registration Process
When you register, select the “SSWR Volunteer” as your registration type. Completing the registration process includes providing credit card information. A minimum of $1.00 transaction must be charged to place your card on file. The credit card will not be charged for the remaining balance unless you do not come to your shift without prior notice. You will receive a refund following the conference of $1.00 if you complete the volunteer requirements.

Membership Demographic Questions on Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation and Race and Ethnicity:
In 2019, the Membership Committee, chaired by Lin Fang, employed a systematic process to modify the sexual orientation/sexual identity and gender identity questions on the membership form. The goal of these modifications is to ensure that the membership form captures the most accurate and inclusive information about our SSWR constituents. This information will be used to tailor programs and practices that more effectively address diversity and inclusion within our organization. Currently, the main charge for the 2020 Membership Committee is to undergo a similar process to modify and update the current questions about race, ethnicity and disability on the membership form. In sum, we aim to complete this process and have the membership and registration forms updated in Fall 2021; in time for the 2022 SSWR annual meeting. The membership committee will continue to utilize a transparent process that is responsive to the membership. We appreciate your support as we embark on this journey and welcome the involvement and feedback of membership.
